In this piece, I blended acrylic, oil, and pastels to craft an ethereal underwater realm based on the original Hans Christian Andersen fairytale. Evoking the transcendent bond between the ocean’s mystique and human emotion, I sought to reflect the story’s key themes of spirituality, love, sense of belonging, and personal growth. The mermaid’s gaze and movement spiralling upward, adrift in thought as she’s following the white foamy bubble of a sailing ship, is oblivious to the colourful ballet of fish and other underwater creatures around her. 

The artwork invites the viewer to dive into a serene yet vibrant introspection, and aspires to infuse any space it’s in with reflection and wonder.
